How to Verify a Peptide Certificate of Analysis (CoA) in 4 Steps

A Certificate of Analysis is the single most important document in a research peptide order. It's how you confirm that what's in the vial matches what's on the label, and how pure it is. Anyone can email you a PDF that says "99% pure" at the top. Verifying that the PDF corresponds to a real batch, from a real lab, with real results, is the whole game. Here's the four-step process we recommend.

Step 1 — Is the lab named on the CoA a real, findable lab?

Open the CoA and find the lab name. It should be prominently displayed, usually on the letterhead. Google it. A legitimate analytical lab has a website, a phone number, a physical address, and usually some kind of accreditation notice (ISO 17025, GMP, or a similar standard depending on the lab's scope).

If the "lab" turns out to be the vendor's own in-house QC, that's not third-party verification — it's the vendor grading their own homework. In-house QC is fine as a supplement to third-party testing, but it should not be the only test on the CoA. If the CoA has no lab name at all, or the name is generic ("Analytical Services"), you can't proceed with verification and should treat the certificate as unverified.

Step 2 — Does the batch number on the CoA match the vial?

This is the most important check. Every real CoA has a batch or lot number, and every research peptide vial has one printed on the label. They should match exactly. Put the vial next to the CoA and read them side by side.

A mismatch could mean several things. Best case: the vendor pulled the wrong CoA when packaging your order, and a quick email will get you the right one. Middle case: the vendor doesn't actually track batches carefully, and the CoA is a stand-in from a prior batch — that's a QC problem worth knowing about. Worst case: the batch on your vial has never been tested, and the CoA is theatre. Don't guess which one it is; ask the vendor.

Also check the test date. A CoA dated before the batch number's timeline (impossible) or dated years ago (stale) is another sign of paperwork that hasn't kept up with reality.

Step 3 — Do the test results actually say what they claim?

Read the HPLC purity number. It should be in the high nineties for a well-made peptide. If a chromatogram thumbnail is included, look at it: one dominant peak is what you want, with the smaller impurity peaks small enough that you have to squint to see them. A chromatogram with a forest of peaks that all look about the same height is telling you the sample is a mess, regardless of the headline percentage.

Read the mass spec section. It should list the theoretical molecular weight (calculated from the sequence) and the observed molecular weight (measured by the instrument). They should match within about 1 Dalton. If it just says "confirmed" with no numbers, that's a soft red flag — you want the actual figures, not just a claim.

Step 4 — Cross-reference with the vendor's public batch record

The best vendors publish a public batch registry — a page where you can look up your batch number and see the same CoA the vendor emailed you. If the vendor has one, use it. The CoA you have and the CoA on the site should be byte-for-byte identical PDFs.

If the vendor doesn't have a public registry, you can still cross-reference by asking support to confirm the batch number and CoA out of band. A quick email that says "please confirm you shipped me batch XYZ with CoA dated " gets a straight answer. If the vendor's support can't or won't confirm, that's information.

For extreme belt-and-suspenders verification, email the lab itself. Give them the batch number and ask if they tested it. Some labs will confirm, some will decline for confidentiality reasons, some won't respond. It's rarely necessary but occasionally satisfying, especially for large orders. What if the CoA doesn't pass verification?

Don't use the peptide until it's cleared up. Email the vendor with clear photos: the vial label, the CoA header, and the specific field that doesn't match (batch, date, whatever it is). Most vendors will respond within a business day. If the vendor can send a corrected CoA quickly, chances are it was a paperwork mistake. If they get defensive or drag out the response, that tells you something too.

If the vendor confirms the CoA is correct but you're still uncomfortable with the results, you can request a refund. Legitimate vendors would rather take a return than have a customer using a batch they don't trust. Just be clear about what triggered the concern so the vendor can look at their own QC.

How long does it take to verify a CoA?

About five minutes if the lab and vendor make it easy. Confirm the lab exists on the internet, match the batch number on the vial to the CoA, skim the HPLC and mass-spec numbers, and — if you want the belt-and-suspenders check — email the lab. Most of the work is in step two, which is a plain visual match.

What if the vendor won't provide a batch-specific CoA?

Walk away. A vendor that gives you a "generic" or "sample" CoA is telling you they either don't test every batch or don't want you to see the actual results. The whole point of a CoA is that it corresponds to the specific vial you paid for. Anything else is marketing paper.

The lab named on the CoA has no website. Is that a problem?

Usually yes. Established analytical labs have websites, contact information, and often accreditation certifications. A lab you can't find online could be a small shop under a different corporate name, or it could be a lab that doesn't exist. If you can't confirm the lab is real, treat the CoA as unverified.

What if the CoA batch number doesn't match my vial?

Email the vendor with photos of the vial label and the CoA before you use the peptide. Sometimes it's a legitimate mix-up — the vendor pulled the wrong CoA from their system and can send the correct one. Sometimes it's a batch mismatch that suggests broader QC problems. Either way, don't proceed until it's cleared up.
